Word is that he is the go-to lore guy now, with Lucas' blessings. This is why he’s so heavy involved in The Mandalorian. This will be his first live action direction gig. They are grooming him, believe it.

Filoni has a plan. Filoni has a platform. Filoni is the Lucas we needed. Provided that The Mandalorian gives Disney+ what they think they need, I expect a lot more of Ahsoka, Sabine, Thrawn and Ezra at the very least.
