Boils down to money... People don't want grippy tires that have to replaced more often. People don't want to pay much for brake jobs. People don't want the "copper dust" polluting the environment (ref. Jalopnik article) so we have to use less affective materials.

I love how the wheel wells don't line up with the wheelbase... but at least the body panels are painted to match the car, and there aren't huge gaps in the body.

Not original rims, new engine, cheap speakers in the door, exposed wiring, plywood under the dash, ... and a rust bucket. And really; a Trailer Hitch, this car has beaten to $**t.
