Look I know this is my answer to every open thread, but it has to be Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. They knew seven seasons would do it, spent the last season wrapping up events in an epic eight-part arc followed by an even more episode two-hour finale.
TNG. The last couple seasons were really good, and then maybe a little flat towards the end (Troi-Worf, anyone?), but it was still overall great and the finale was perfect, giving both a definitive series finale while still leaving it open for further adventures (whether in the audiences' imagination or in the movies).
I think this movie walked the line pretty perfectly, but too many people don't get the joke part:
Starship Troopers, I want more. Original, not self-serious sequels.
I don't know about "best possible way", but I do have a soft spot for The Chronicles of Riddick.
Ya...just the whole movie.
