So everyone gets to vote on their first, second, and third choice. Then, if borderlands two gets 100 first place votes 50 second place votes and 10 third but xcom gets 50 first place 200 second place votes and 100 third place votes, xcom would win.

Can we do this with instant run-off? We could rank our first second and third choice. This might end up with, say x-com being the game of the year as it is everyones second choice.
