Fording rivers halfway up the windscreen is impressive in any vehicle. This road kills heaps of cars each year.

I didn’t know that the difference between Mk1 and Mk2 was that much so thanks for filling me in. My partner nixed my idea of her buying a Lexus CT200h (prius mech) recently to buy a Golf which has been a mechanical nightmare.

I can’t beat actual experience as I’ve only used a Gen 2 which fixed those issues you discussed. I guess the best you can say it the Gen 1 was a test bed for the Gen 2.
How was it garbage? It looked terrible and was slow but proved stout enough.
Anyone that has owned a Tercel 4wd Wagon vehemently disagrees

My optioned up Corolla All-trac Wagon SR5 in 1988 cost $30,000 Aus. Making it about $64,000 in todays money. with the exchange rate of $1.00 AU to .75c US makes it $48,117 when new - so close!
Are you in Europe? VW seem to be more reliable there. I’ve had a MK1 and Mk4 that were just OK at best. A Mk5 diesel manual that is a trooper. (Misc minor Electrics and interior not included). Now a MK6 tsi Manual that is a constant problem and swallows oil, timing chains and compressors. My 2nd hand Volvos for…
