I’m not sure about the USA but in Australia. A lot of stuff went on roof bars (usually badly tied down), trailers were common to buy and rent as most cars were 6 cylinder and had tow bars and there were quite a lot of utes (el caminos) around.
Well houses were a lot smaller 50 years ago there is that but I guess glof clubs and suitcases are a fairly standardised unit. I imagine furniture purchases were rare as it was still expensive to buy furniture and was expected to last a long time so probably delivered before flat packing.
