A good friend of mine was recently released from prison. In five years, her hair went from dark black to completely white: stress, trauma, and malnutrition. There are certain foods she can no longer consume due to memories of those foods being served either rotten or infested on a constant basis.

As a gay man, these cry-wolf stories sicken me. Don’t these tragic people understand the harm their fake stories do? Beyond ruining their own reputation, it perpetuates an idea that queer people are exaggerating or lying for attention rather than actually being persecuted.
