Sorta, except you manage all your shops, restock items and move in the people. The "Bitizens" you move in have different skill sets (at random) and they're are enslaved to work in your tower forever, or not. Your choice.

It was brought into in New Super Mario Bros. for the DS too, which is a neat homage.
