Great article! Cognitive biases as a class are impossible to eliminate, but this is a good guideline for how to address a specific one when it's important.

Being able to play one's own devil's advocate, the ability to think "I could be wrong" and mean it, these are critical skills that must be learned; they aren't

I've been considering a solution similar to this (that is, assembled from parts of other furniture :D ). I want a higher desk, one that I can use while sitting in a drafting chair or standing, so I have picked up a couple of the wire shelves that are approximately the right height, and I've got a solid wood entry door

I don't think that phrase means what you think it means.

Yeah, I don't get the whole "it isn't quite as strong or easy to tear, so we're going to recommend you buy another brand that's twice as expensive." I'm with you. I'm a fan of Costo TP and Paper Towels.

Because only old people give a shit whether something is what it claims to be?

We call it the $200 store. LOL

I wonder if that's because, when perched, the angle between your thighs and back is much more oblique than when "full on sitting"? I'd love to see the article if you find it, either way.

Great article! I've been considering this question for some time and I think I've decided to elevate my desk and buy a good drafting chair. That way I can go between standing and sitting without moving the desk (great idea from a comment thread on lifehacker) up and down. I wanted a treadmill desk, but I converted a

I keep planning on going to college and never doing it. At this point in my life - 51 years old, autodidact (no formal education beyond high school), systems engineer with a well-established, lucrative career - I find myself doubting the economic value of formal education to me, and opting for online, free courses for

I like Atom a lot - I've been playing with it since I saw it in the "Five Best Text Editors" bit - but it's often very slow to start, close, or open a file. Other than that, though, it's really extremely nice.

That one looks very nice!

1UZ wasn't being an internet idiot; the problem with your assertion is - without exception in my experience - when you slow down, the tailgater will CLOSE THE DISTANCE, thus reducing your time to stop. Physics isn't the problem here, personality is.

There's a really great book on this topic - "The Happiness Hypothesis", by Johnathan Haidt.

Considerable research seems to show that lack of money can cause unhappiness, once one reaches some threshold between lack and have, adding more money has successively lower happiness responses.

I suspect that the rich folk we

LOL Yeah. Vikings. Shameless inside-joke-commenting, sorry. Love that show, and the theme song is pretty f'in awesome.

Awesome! "If I Had A Heart", by Fever Ray. Thanks!

I agree with your concern about animal treatment. I (personally) avoid factory farmed food whenever possible.

I would add, however, that simply avoiding factory farmed beef addresses the environmental concerns nicely. The propaganda pieces you've read about "meat" compare factory farmed beef against corn and potatoes

Well, no harm, no foul. Just be aware that if you feel the need to say, "no offense intended", you're probably getting ready to say something unnecessary and offensive, and you shouldn't be surprised if there is some feather-ruffling to follow. :D

You can search scholar.google.com and get a plethora of hits about this topic, but you have to be careful of the methodology. The upshot of what I've seen is that eating lots of vegetables, nuts, and legumes significantly reduces one's cancer risk independent of meat consumption. That is, there's little difference
