They designed the N64 controller around the types of games they were making at the time. No one had set a standard for how 3d console games…

I never had any problem with the N64 controller. At the time at least I always found it comfortable, and it worked great (at least for the games designed for it). I recall having a harder time adjusting to the shape of the PS1’s handles after playing SNES so long.
