Probably because they have people saying, "Oh, you let it happen", "Why didn't you stop him", "Why didn't you leave", blah blah. So they likely feel guilt and shame, and feel like part of it was their own doing. That and he's a rich fuck.

sorry about your limited knowledge about human psychology but being unable to react is common behaviour for humans in a situation of traumatic experience.
