And why don't you think they shot Frances Ha digitally, in color, for the exact same reasons you just mentioned? Might Baumbach and his DP Sam Levy been in the same situation?

It should be noted that Greta Gerwig, who grew up in middle class Sacramento and once had dreams of becoming a dancer in New York, cowrote Frances Ha with Baumbach. She deserves some authorial credit here, and was certainly writing about what she knew.

But isn't the desire to become a professional dancer inherently a lifestyle choice? This isn't The Bicycle Thief. Also, Frances is 27 - anybody can tell she's not going to make it as a dancer at this point, so I don't think the film is meant to be taken as an serious look at a struggling artist. It's about an immature

The White Ribbon, Control, The Man Who Wasn't There, The Artist, Good Night and Good Luck and Nebraska were all shot on color, then converted to b&w, and I think they all look pretty great. But you go ahead and tell those films' DPs, including Robert Elswit and Roger Deakins, how absurd their choices were.

Totally disagree. The movie shows that she comes from a middle-class background in Sacramento, California, and that her dancing isn't particularly good. (Thinking anybody could be "successful as a dancer anywhere in the country" - now THAT'S a fantasy.) She's basically a loser who winds up having to give up on her

Wow, so much hate in this thread for Frances Ha. I liked it very much, actually, and found it bittersweet to see a kind, naive woman thinking that New York in 2012 was like the fantasy New York of the 1970s - gritty, bohemian and inspiring - only to realize that only the rich and well-connected can afford to live

You don't know how crappy his cast's acting choices might have been without him there to step in and say "tone it down, keep it real."

Ha ha, he can watch a few episodes of Daredevil, go out and watch High-Rise, then come back to watch the rest of Daredevil!

I thought The Force Awakens was the greatest fan film ever made.

There's now a rule that blocks animated films from being nominated for Best Picture?

Why not? Toy Story 3 and Up were both nominated for Best Picture.

Still cried. Fuck you.

A Well Respected Corpse

I don't understand how this middling actor keeps winding up in everything. Although I will say that he was well-cast in Brooklyn.

The joyless.

"bought", lol

He's angling to take over the Onion's long-dormant Jackie Harvey column.

Shh, those are being saved for her secret surprise dates at a honky-tonk in Bakersfield and a crackhouse in Camden, NJ.

I for one will be standing there with urine streaming down my legs.

They're secretly backing Hillary this time.
