Quick launch is just tiny icons - pinned icons are a combination of larger quick launch icons with the functionality of show what's open as well. I have no problem with pinned icons and find it curious someone would prefer something else.

The maps are an insult. What I really love are the new VZW 4G maps that are just dots or stars on the cities and do absolutely nothing to convey the extent of coverage.
