The grey/approved status is per site, so getting approval on Gawker doesn't give you approval on io9, for example. This also stands true for the numerous user-created blogs: your status is per-blog.

Microsoft is getting a lot of flack about it because of the whole "cursing in Skype" shebang, but honestly, I agree with you here: I like the addition to the games, because it means developers are getting creative and using resources in new and less-than-expected fashions.
