I hope at some point down the line, MS will at least bring back these things they cut as optional features. Maybe re-jigger XBL Gold or something so its not required for everything that's online, but is required if you want the extra features (game sharing/lending, discless play, etc).

That's the problem. With this reversal, PS4 and X1 are simply boosted versions of their predecessors, and apart from the non-gaming features of the X1, the two are practically identical.
