I wouldn't take the daily mail article to seriously, it's an ad. I doubt that there even was a study. UK publications don't put the *sponsored content tag like you would see in most US based publications.. Not that I disagree with what Lindy is saying but, you know.. a grain of salt.

No, they are ridiculous. Especially this one.

Am I alone in thinking that these proposals are super manipulative on the man's part? Because so many women would say yes just to avoid humiliating the guy (and yes, I've seen the videos on YouTube of women who do say no).

Your comment might have a good point but it's kind of floating around in the wind, not tethered to anything in this thread. I'm not going to dismiss you though. Let us refresh ourselves:

U mad?

Historical context and power differentials are the difference. When you have white people dressing up as stereotypes of people who were conquered and oppressed by white people and who are still marginalized today by white people it adds dimensions to the situation.

The big difference is that the Greek-themed party is people in togas, akin to these people simply wearing Ankara cloth or some beads. But here we have blackface & a klu klux klan member & an elephant. Not to be crass, but the equivalent would be to include, say, men fucking young boys at your Greek-themed party.

Umm, nationality is not the same as race so one might be able to discriminate against a certain nationality, but it would not be the same as being racist.

He's not borrowing anything. He's simply a faithful student of the musical and cultural traditions unique to his native New Orleans. He's a master of an art form that happened to have been created by black people.

for real? You don't see the difference. Boy bye

No, this commenter is explicitly saying that there never was minstrelsy in Australia, therefore this isn't blackface it's just a costume. This is both false and stupid.

Oh, a million times YES re: colonialism.

Oh, dear. Australia has a long history of blackface. On what scholar's work are you basing the idea that this is not the case? Because quite a few historians have done an excellent job of documenting the performances of troupes throughout the region (as well as throughout Europe and Latin America).

FUUUCKK! Reading about this stupid bitch done made me stupid. I rail hard against people doing that too.

I'd just go as Africa. Like, I'd go in a cardboard cut out of the country and paint it like those little kid maps of the world. You know, a lion in South Africa, pyramids in Egypt, camels in the Sahara— that kind of thing.

And they do in fact have that history of blackface... minstrel shows are an Australian 'tradition' that dates back to at least the 1830s.

... So you're just ignorant of the 'tradition' of minstrel shows in Australia that extends 'for over a hundred years'? That... explains some things.

Are these her parents? This is so bizarre, it's not like a frat party where the patients are basically running the asylum; there are bona fide adults at this thing, and everyone seems to have bought in to the "theme" with nary a side eye. What the fuck?
