Maybe not as prevalent (maybe), but minstrel shows have been a part of Australian culture since the early 1800s. Sad, but there it is in history.

I don't really think

Your reply should have stopped there.

No, fucking seriously. Google is your friend. What the fuck are you on about? You know what, I don't even wanna know, I'd rather you take the time to learn some fucking history.

While that makes sense, there is the KKK in Australia.

Maybe dude was actually an Australian Klansman? Because apparently Australia has the KKK as well as a nearly 200-year-old 'tradition' of minstrel shows.

Well, it's the basis of modern racism. It's the basis of the modern slave trade and the genocide of indigneous countries. Most people don't even want to admit that colonialism is a problem, much less an ongoing one.

It's part of a nearly 200-year long tradition... and one that's directly relevant to this discussion, so no, I don't want to derail into other ways Australia is racist.

Fair point. People can't acknowledge that all these flavours of racism are part of a continuum of colonialism and I can see how cultural narrative play into that.

... I didn't know Coon Cheese was a thing. I guess consider all this and things like Golliwog giftshops, I shouldn't be surprised an more than I was about the 'party' this article is about.

As I said to 'critta':

That comment helped me and everyone who found what it was in reply-to offensive. Tone-trolling on the other hand, really isn't helpful. If you can't understand that, don't bother saying anything.

I'm not sure... it's really hard to compare historical eras between two different countries.

Well, maybe not right at this very moment, but with the past several years? Yes. Google is your friend on that one. Which may bum you out.

I think there's some genuine ignorance in there, not that that makes it better.

I'd like to reach a point where I can be less angry about these things and react more calmly, I really do.

I think a lot of people are insulated from understanding, which leads to a lot of pointless denial on their part.

I'm glad you are, keep it up and remember that confronting racism is important regardless of how hard racists push back.

I'm sorry, I'm really sorry that that's the case :( I've had the same thought about the US (Despite many many people for some reason thinking I'm uncritical of this country for some reason). I think a lot of people think 'racism is over' and that's taken the piss out of a lot of the resistance to racism.

For serious?

It's a lovely little bit of derailment, no? And by 'lovely' I mean, 'utterly shitty and pointless'.
