If you know what you're doing there is no "getting lucky," and again if you know what you're doing you can get the settings right, and you can generally tell when you messed up a photo. I know my camera well enough that I can usually look at a scene and say this needs to be 1/60th at f4. Or you could use a light meter.

Or you could just copy an image of the subway system to your phone.
