Personally - and this is just me - I like to contribute to my 401k up to the amount my employer matches (maximize the free money). Anything additional I want to contribute, I put into my IRA. I don't make enough to be too concerned with contributing to my 401k and maxing out my IRA and still wanting to contribute more.
