"Sound Design by David Lynch"

It reminds me of Kubrick, who frequently evinced performances on the razor's edge between unspeakably, searingly brilliant and so bad you can't believe it (Pauline Kael used to devote entire paragraphs to how "awful," say, the 2nd-tier actors in Clockwork Orange and The Shining were — but then she really hated Kubrick

Syringe in shoulder? Or is that the other debate?

Except that you're forgetting (or not properly reckoning with) Mark Frost. Lynch by himself might abandon all of that. With Frost aboard, no way.

Has anybody yet figured out what it meant when Cole put his arm behind his head with his hand sticking out like a baseball cap visor over his eyes? (Right after introducing Desmond to Stanley.)

Fair enough. I just meant, just because he's not directing until the last episode doesn't mean he was gone.

He wasn't directing but he was around, influencing what happened (rather than being on the other end of the country shooting Wild at Heart).

With Isaak lowering the antenna!

That's what I'm saying! (Apologies for being unclear.) He finds the most attractive women and then smears them with grime or gives them scars or club-feet or insane, awful outfits, and, of course, they look even more spectacular. It's one of his favorite moves.

Yeah, I guess you're right.

And the hotel room key! Don't forget the hotel room key!

That's just my own guess, based on that ostentatious shot. I can't remember which episode or which director; I just remember seeing it and doing the Tyler Durden "Oh, I get it. Very clever."

Thanks for straightening all of that out. The rest of us were trapped in a state of confusion, believing ourselves to be watching some brilliant television. Thank God you've cleared that up for us.

One of the C-team directors got a big kick out of starting a scene by pulling back from a close-up of Lynch's ear (like, "Do you guys get it? Blue Velvet except it's actually his real ear? Pretty good, huh?")

I have a crush on Sky Ferreira and when I heard she was in this, I figured/hoped that Lynch would make her really messy and gross and fucked-up (which is his favorite thing to do to extremely attractive performers). I was not disappointed.

The best is still when he screamed "BANZAI!" into the plant with the microphone (and we cut to Windom Earle in headphones, wincing in pain).

All right, come on…work with me a little, can't you? I just wrote six paragraphs; I think I made a reasonable point. I'm as much of a fan of all of it as anyone else; I'm not complaining about anyone or anything. Can't you respond with something more than sneering, clipped, rude disdain?

It's not weed, obviously; we know from the other scene that Jerry's inadvertently placed himself on the physical edge of some of that dark weirdness in the woods that we've been aware of since the beginning. It is happening again etc.

I think this is one of those instances where people think they know what they want, but they really don't (generally because our memories are flawed and unreliable). The people who wished the new show was like the old one, just got to see what that would actually be like.

Maybe he did time.
