Eh, I disagree. As a long time fan, goofy is The Doctor's prerogative, even in his more serious incarnations.

From the finale, I just went to speculating that Danny's biological family coming into play somehow who become connected with Doctor shennigans and Clara becomes a close friend of the family or some such and Orson wanted to give Clara something which was important to Danny.
