Yep. Jeff is the group's barrier to enjoyment. 
Maybe it's a deliberate plot decision to stop Jeff evolving into a "fonz" like character. He's always been negative and self-regarding but this season less-charmingly. Jeff no longer has all the right answers.

Are they worried about comparisons to Lost and holding back on the mysterious machine, numbers, plot aspect? 
 Elias and bigger plot arc needs to kick in now. Plus more indication that the so-so mundane victims they've been helping have some consequence  to the greater good, or have I misread the premise to the show?

Angel & Faith sounds good. Not least because my biggest problem with the Buffy series is working out who the characters are meant to be
