Getting shot in the foot is no joke. It could be career ending for a dancer, smashing through bone and obliterating muscles and nerves. It could mean pain that never goes away, cursing you for years, if not the rest of your life.
Indomitable dignity is attractive. A piercing intellect is attractive. A persistent, creative spirit that can craft a unique world so compelling that it draws you in and lets you lose yourself is attractive. Athleticism is attractive. Lots of traits are attractive.

But aren’t white people today comfortable with a system of harsh punishments for Black defendants and lenience for white defendants? Where the laws are applied unequally?
The “justice” system should go after Amy Cooper with the same zeal that it does for Black defendants: she should be tried, convicted, and punished unduly harshly.
I can believe that they didn’t think about the implications at first, but I’m sure they’ve known about it for a long, long time.
Getting a second chance when others would not is the epitome of privilege.

It’s clever, but it’s humor that punches down. The protesters are fighting from weakness and have only moral force on their side, while the police represent the force of the state with its monopoly on violence.
