I’m openly rooting for him to have just been a father of seven who was reading a book while waiting for his son, rather than a dead man who’s going to have his legacy become a debate over why he had a gun.

The thing that gets me is that it doesn’t matter. NC is an open carry state. And if there was a gun, and it wasn’t registered to him, the cops on the scene had no way of knowing that at a glance. He was a private citizen, carrying a private firearm, as is he is in his rights to do.
