In windows 7, if you click the volume control in the tray, then click mixer, it lets you adjust the volume of specific applications, and lets you mute any application independent of all the others.

I can already see manufacturers fucking around with the orientation of the ground pin, so some of them will be upside down and defeat the whole purpose of this.
