I don’t think a person like this believes we’ve failed the poor, the homeless, the mentally ill. All he can see is that such people have failed him. The perspective is that selfish and delusional.

Its completely possible that he considers himself a progressive. I meet people who think they’re politically enlightened, but who have zero sympathy for the homeless, the mentally ill, and think people in prisons deserve every inhumanity that can happen in there.
