I think it’s safe to say that, relationships included, gaming shaped my life as it stands today. My favorite technique is to play ASCII based games (Dwarf Fortress, Cataclysm, etc.), so when my manager walks by and asks if I’m playing a game, I just say yes. Then he keeps walking because I pretty much get paid for doing nothing anyways.

They might just as easily apply to a personal code or religious doctrine, and your character could feasibly follow those to the contrary of the local laws if they felt they were more important.
