It really wasn't that bad, just an artifact of its time and the pretty teenagers in LA movies they were making then. You could look at it as more a precursor to a smart teen comedy like Mean Girls than the Whedonverse. Valley Girl was a lot smarter than it looked too. It's just a genre thing.
