1st Gear: Musk just wants to boost the value of the emissions credits he’s selling. There ain’t nothing high-minded about his statement. He’s a frickin’ rent-seeker. His whole house of card is built on a foundation of government subsidy.

If you’re gonna go retro, be a grizzly!
Shh! Never let common sense get in the way of a clickbait headline!
Rich people just buy these to hoon around. No one isn’t buying this to be a survivalist.
I mean, all vehicles are designed for carrying stuff, right? My point is that there is more to a vehicle, any vehicle, than a single figure, especially if that one figure is not exceptionally high or low, but right in the middle.
The fully boxed frame was mentioned in a TTAC article:
Seriously - if that isn’t even road legal, who buys it except for some weirdo survivalist family-cult with far more money than novel genetic material.
That is good if they did fully box the frame. I’ve been looking for that info but haven’t found it. Where did you see the fully boxed frame?
Its everything, including fluids and fuel.
and a similarly configured Tundra will have about that as well. For the most off-road trim, its pretty good. Remember than a Powerwagon 3/4 ton has a payload of 1510. Those are the breaks for a capable off-road suspension.
Everything you add to the vehicle. That includes upgrades, people, cargo, tongue weight. Everything.
You are wrong. Payload is always maximum stuff carry
Nope, it’s every pound added to the vehicle. Every single burrito you’ve eaten and all.
Likely the same reason towing capacity is magically higher in Europe for the same vehicle. Regulations. I think towing in Europe is a more regulated affair (imagine that), with slower speeds. In the US, if it is rated to tow, you need to be able to go fast. The (safe) towing capacity decreases with speed.
The European Ranger Raptor has a payload of... 1400 lbs.
Offroad trims take a penalty from other configurations on the vehicle. We also have different (higher) standards, drive more miles and have overall higher speed limits. I’ve seen a Lada packed with a tonne of mandarins, just because it’s possible doesn’t mean you should do it on American highways.
Yea, this has to be one of the most useless, misinformation, narrow minded articles I’ve read so far. Utter garbage really. Is this what passes for journalism these days?
Yeah, this was a fairly bad take. The off-road trims have a payload penalty, calling it the “top trim” and then making conclusions is bad.
the ranger’s “max payload” is only 1900 LBS if you have the extended cab (not double cab) and 2wd. if you have the double cab and 4x4 the ranger drops down to 1,600 pounds.
What a weird take. I mean, 1455 ish lbs is a really good number for an off-road trim. It’s more than a Raptor, it’s more than a TRX, it’s not that far off from a power wagon (non-tradesman)
