The Illusionist with Edward Norton was out around the same time, so these two movies were often compared. I loved Prestige, felt gyped by Illusionist; wanted to like it, but was ultimately disappointed. But many other people feel exactly the opposite, enjoyed Illusionist and did not like Prestige.
Nolan reveals the trick much earlier. At the very beginning of the movie, Cutter shows the collapse-the-cage-with-the-bird-in-it trick, establishing its thematic centrality. I basically agree with the sentiment, but someone should call out the sexism of "the breadth and depth of female friendship", if only for form's sake. Males don't have friendships of breadth and depth?
I like the Kiera Knightley one a lot. Donald Sutherland throws me right out of the movie, but otherwise the staging and direction are wonderful. You really feel the cramped space these people occupied, the difficulty with getting even a moment's privacy to get to know your girlfriend.boyfriend, etc. And the scene…

Emphatically agree. 40 Year Old Virgin might disqualify, by being more of a pure comedy then these others, but the romance at the heart of it is the reason why the movie is sweet and not merely raunchy. And *SO* sweet. Great pick.
