I think that has to do with the turn camber. Basically, if it' a minus, it's falling off to the outside. If it's a plus, it's a positive camber turn (banked to hold you into the turn.) Am I right here? Anyone?

Yeah, you're most likely right. Tough to tell but if there was significant, immediate pitch up like it appears, I too doubt they pulled it up. Just looks like it's extending right before impact, but I'm now thinking it's the angle and you just can't see it until then.
Yep. Exactly right, Scrambler. You can even see (I think) that he or she deploys the landing gear right before impact. Keeps on trying to save it... Horrific.
I personally got to ask this exact question to the crew of STS-109 and the response was that it smelled like the smell after a burnt match. Kind of sulfer-like. They said they could smell it on the suits in the airlock after the spacewalks. Very cool.
