What a shame. Each year, a little more of the salt flats disappears due mostly to the mining operations. Hopefully, things will change next year.

Harry Miller made some of the most beautiful cars ever made in the great U, S of A. Indy car racing was the grandest of all US Motorsports until that false prophet Tony George killed it. When I think of the prestige, grandeur and history of the sport, I shed tears over what has become of single seat racing, especially…
True that.
Brilliant insight there Torch. You must be some kind of a prophet because what you said is so logical as well as insightful into how Apple would market a vehicle. This much I know: It will be white and come packaged in a sexy box that will be utilitarian while desirable at the same time.
When I first saw the picture, I saw a contradiction: a Merkava turret with non-sloping front armor. The M60 roots are there, plain as day. Pretty creative and sneaky at the same time to use an M60, disguised as a Merkava to launch guided missiles. I find it fascinating that the Spike missile is referred to as the…
Really? Do you think Hezbollah, backed by Iran, has the wherewithall to invade Israel? Nope, just as I thought.
I feel so terrible over this. Jules was an up and coming star and his warm smile and charming demeanor have been stolen from us. Jules comes from a family that produced good racing drivers while also knowing tragedy. His grandfather was Mauro Bianchi and his granduncle was Lucien Bianchi, who won the 1968 LeMans race…
I learned years ago that the BBB is as worthless as tits on a boar hog. You can register complaints and voice your anger, but at the end of the day, you just wasted your precious time. I think social media is a much better way to express your frustration. Great article Steve!
I knew we were in good hands when I read that Andy would be testing the Viper. I had nightmares of Patrick getting pulled over in Virginia by the Gestapo who masquerade as police. Thank goodness that Andy was able to extract the full potential of the car at the track. Oh, and make mine blue with white stripes!
Too funny Doug. Loved the comment about the Accord driver growing up in rural Nebraska. I could add to the list starting with the gappers who in traffic jams, allow a football field’s gap to the car in front of it. Naturally, people will gladly fill in that gap so that the wait in the jam is even longer. I too find…
First of all, I give a high five to Ford for having the chutzpah to build an entire truck out of aluminum. The aluminum that Ford is using is supposed to be military grade. Ford is trying to demonstrate that trucks can be rugged and lighter at the same time, at least that is how it is supposed to go.
I hate automotive reality shows. They are contrived and canned. You can tell everything is fake and everyone is following a script. I saw a program that I believe was on Velocity about Patrick Dempsey and his race team. That was fascinating and showed the struggles the team was going through. I would rather see some…
Good one!
Laguna Seca has noise limits I believe. Maybe they get some kind of dispensation for the Historic races.
Patrick, you have always been my favorite writer here on Jalopnik. You are one of us. I too commend you for your professionalism and fabulous articles. Thank you for keeping Jalopnik from being tainted by Gawker.
All I can say is, “thank God” that I saw and heard Can Am cars and F1 cars in person during the 1960s and 70s. Nothing like either a 510 Reynolds Chevy Big Block in a McLaren or a 3 liter, twelve cylinder Ferrari or Matra F1 engine. I still remember being at the start/finish line at Road America when 30 roaring Can Am…
I had no idea that there was a shipbuilding facility in Wisconsin. Pretty cool to launch out into Lake Michigan. I had hoped that the USS Wisconsin could have been brought to a port in either Lake Superior or Lake Michigan, but I have been told that the locks in the St, St. Lawrence Seaway were not long enough to…
The Vulcan is definitely on my top ten list of planes. I will forever associate it with James Bond and Thunderball. I always loved the camouflage scheme which hearkened back to the patterns of WWW2 Spitfires. The good folks at Avro also gave us the Lancaster. They produce beautiful and deadly planes.
I am so sorry to hear this. What a terrible shame. A very likable and talented driver, his talent and personality have been stolen from us. I know this has been extremely hard on his family. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to them as all of us who love motorsports mourn his loss.
Thanks for the history lesson. I think I could have figured that out for myself. Nice to have people think for you. :(
