I had a similar experience seeing Atoms for Peace (Thom Yorke's side project with Flea). It was very…loud. And you couldn't really hear Yorke singing over it.

It was my least favorite, but the "Play With Fire" montage was a transcendent moment.

I think part of the reason for monologues being unsatisfying is that it is essentially stand up that is churned out rapidly without time for refining, as most stand-ups do. Also it is limited to topical humor, which is sometimes funny, but can be a limit on potential topics for jokes.
