I think the missing sense of progression and some lean in on elemental play are my only real qualms with the game. It could also have benefitted from some end game optional dungeons instead of treating NG+ as the end game (which thus far has been really fun as the remixed encounters bring some of the more fun late

I don’t want to be ten years older, but I am very interested to see what the conversation around this game is like in ten years.

Chalk it up to difference in perspective I guess. As the game goes on I am less interested.

Simply put. FF16 is a failure because adopters tax.

If you get to the halfway point and don't think this a proper FF title I don't know what you played.

The demo was widely praised so I don't even know what you're talking about.

I'd say it's done pretty well for being a PS5 exclusive.

I mean, this is Square Enix. Unless the title sells through to literally every owner of a PS5 it’ll be an inevitable disappointment to them.

Manage your fucking organization, good lord man. Wildly successful and critical hits in the Tomb Raider and Hitman franchises when they were under SE’s purview were met with

They definitely lost me due to how drastically they’ve altered the gameplay style. I finally wrote it off completely once it was confirmed you could only play as one character. That just isn’t Final Fantasy to me.

Ive been expecting a reverse-International Version for some time. (For those that dont know Japan traditionally received a re-release of Final Fantasy games about a year later adding and changing content to be more like the western release like lowering the difficulty, introducing simplified talent trees, adding

Honestly, my biggest issue with it is that it just seems uninteresting. The shift to a more ‘mature’ tone doesn’t bother me so much as the feeling that it is lacking what I’ve enjoyed about the franchise until now. The demo had me just not feeling it at all.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but for me at least, FFXVI just looked boring, and that’s the biggest sin for me as far as Final Fantasy goes

To me it seems that what we’re learning is that they tried something new and failed to push forward a new standard. Instead, they have split their base, potentially alienating the people most likely to stick around and breath life and enthusiasm into the game. As it is, I’m willing to bet most people stanning for XVI

I just find it funny SE is phasing out the RPG elements of FF while a whole bunch of other series have been phasing RPG elements in and selling tons of units while doing it.

Something about this fan base seems to be particularly toxic right now and I do think the article is right about a lot of it tying into the pressure surrounding the reception of this game.

In my eyes it isn’t really out yet, its on PS5, I don’t own a PS5 and don’t have plans to get one. Once they release it on PC I’ll probably wait until it drops under the $69.99 price range. Square/ PlayStation has thought me to wait.

It’s difficult. FF16 isn’t a failure, but it is an indicator of something of which Square should take take heed. The fact that the Japanese fanbase is so ambivalent is worrisome because, believe it or not, overseas consumers buy Final Fantasy games for much the same reasons that Japanese consumers do. The criticisms

I can’t speak for anyone else, but for me at least, FFXVI just looked boring, and that’s the biggest sin for me as far as Final Fantasy goes. Honestly, I’ve felt this way since at least 10 as far as mainline games go. The plot summaries I’ve read have all sounded woefully generic as well, and the Game of Thrones

That’s funny, because the second I started to hear from senior development staff of the game dismissing traditional RPG elements as important to the series I knew there was going to be blowback from fans.

XVI is top 5, possibly top 3 of Final Fantasies. Its thrilling, heartfelt, and is of exceeding overall quality; and it’s the quality of it that will easily carry it, much like XIV before it.
