This was the first major battle of the Civil War, and people had no idea how bloody it would be. They probably thought they'd see some cannons firing and a rout of Confederate troops. If they knew thousands would die, I doubt they would have shown up.

We have drones to do that (the killing, not the feeding). The F-35 started development almost twenty years ago in the early 90's. It will be in service until at least 2040, thirty years from now. Needless to say, the world can change a lot in fifty years and it would be unwise to base a five decade long fighter

If discharged by 50%, you'll get only about 1000 cycles, so it will cost you $5 per night. So your instincts are correct: it makes no sense.

Does IE6 compatibility mode not work for those apps? I wouldn't be surprised if the answer is 'no', but if that's the case, Microsoft should really get on that.

Here's another example of how easy it is to fool the media.

A 90Ah 12V deep cycle battery is about $200 and that's almost exactly 1kWh, so it's about $5000 for the batteries alone. Then you're going to need the electronics to make it work and most people will need an electrician to install it.

Here's a professional's effort. According to the photographer's site, it was taken at Smokey Mountain National Park, which is home to a species of swarming, synchronized firefly. Link

I've never paid to have a puncture fixed. I just take it to Discount Tire and they repair it for free. I always thought this was standard practice.

It's too late to help you, but for anyone else with this problem, you can use one of those cheap foam paintbrushes to paint herbicide directly on the stump. The herbicide will be transported to the roots and will kill the whole plant.

This happened in the west 200 years ago. The Industrial Revolution came along and turned peasants into factory workers. Then innovations in manufacturing reduced the number of workers factories needed to employ. Richard Arkwright, who was the first to harness water power to produce thread, built his first factory like

It means the cost of labor in China is rising and has reached (or soon will reach) the point where it makes sense to use robots. The parts might actually be more expensive, but not as expensive as continuing to use people to perform repetitive tasks.

Even that is wrong. According to the photographer's site, the photos were taken in 2008. They went on display in 2009.

In response to the crisis, game developers have pledged to make all single player campaigns shorter than 10 hours.

Look, I understand all that. All I meant is that events due not occur deterministically.

Note the blue text in my first comment.

Nope, events are truly random. I.E. Their outcomes are not fully determined by initial conditions. Even with perfect knowledge of a quantum mechanical system, you can only describe what could happen, not what will happen.

That was the thinking after Newton described the laws of motion, and gave rise to the idea of the 'clockwork universe' where history evolved on a predetermined, unchangeable path.

The practice was so common under Stalin that the Russians used to say, "The future is predictable; the past is constantly changing."

I don't know... Have you seen their army recently? It's looking pretty intimidating.
