@radarskiy: Formal education is usually the best way to learn things, but it's not the only way. But this is why I said a background, not a degree :). Plus, there's a lot of people with a degree in EE who would be challenged by this, as RF circuit design is often not introduced at undergrad level.

@Grindhouse Murders: I consider DIY to be things that are accessible to a large portion of the population without an excess investment of training or equipment. You can't do this without at least a basic understanding of RF circuit design, digital filters and FPGA development.
