Yes- very inappropriate to expect people to pay for your wedding. There is no good way to ask for money. You really can’t, you just have to say no gifts and hope for cash but you will likely just get a bunch of stuff you don’t need.

Register for like, 10 things and tell people you want cash, pass it on. Put it on your wedding website. Add a map to the location or something, you don’t have to have a crazy website, just a little extra info.
