Well, I would think that the term underwear originally encompassed all under garments and is therefore plural. I just politely, but firmly, state my opinion and move on. If they want to talk to me about stuff I disagree with I usually just excuse myself and talk to somebody else or steer the conversation in another direction. I never apologize for my beliefs but I don't make a big spectacle either.
