Why do people seem to have such a difficult time understanding that saying it’s a betrayal of his ideas to live in a multi-million dollar house does NOT mean we’re saying he has to live a “monastic” life, and that there’s actually a WHOLE spectrum of possibilities between those two extremes?

Not really. Socialism means everybody has ENOUGH. That no one starves. It doesn’t mean that everyone has to be paid exactly the same. There can be inequalities, but not GROTESQUE inequalities.
