Star Trek Federation really sounds like it could have been interesting. I’ve always thought that the way for Star Trek to move forward is by actually moving forward: no reboots, no going back in time, always be set in a future period than previous series.

Asimov did point out himself that his stories are pretty unfilmable without some serious rewriting, considering that they are all basically closet plays of wall-to-wall dialogue with a few perfunctory pieces of action to get characters from point A to point B so that they can talk some more.
