Friday afternoon movie comments have long been among my favorite AVC comments.

I’ve only read the first one and didn’t quite pick up the mild parody aspect—hmm, now I’m interested in going further—but yeah, even having read next to nothing of the original they’re hilariously miscast here.

The original comic basically opens with Valerian and Laureline being helped out by Sun Ra (they change the name a little, and he’s not nearly as interesting/weird as actual Sun Ra, but the homage is there).

I still don’t really see how Lucy is any stupider than any other superhero movie—the only thing separating her ridiculous backstory from any other one is decades of comic readers’ nostalgia.

Lucy not only moves like hell but is also actually a tight ninety minutes as well. For all the jokes above about editors, it’s damn well-crafted.

And on its own the Energia launcher was basically perfect for sending large payloads beyond low Earth orbit!

It was not liked by a giant chunk of the scientific community very early on—the shuttle program very seriously messed with Galileo, first because it was shifted from a conventional rocket to the then-untested shuttle (happened to a bunch of other spacecraft too, IIRC), then the original liquid fuel booster had to be

Noël Coward’s favorite Bond novel!

All Beta Quadrant species look alike to you, don’t they?

Weird thing with my dad is that he has no sign of male pattern baldness elsewhere.

My Dad’s at that point. My Mom tried to get him a nice pair of Madras shorts recently and she just gave up. They get persnickety when the leg hair goes.

I’m feeling pretty lucky, actually—I tend to replace clothes either when they wear out and I decided to just replace a bunch of pants from high school and college with a bunch from Bonobos. Hopefully they’ll last a while, too (though I’ve managed to keep a pair of white pants from H&M clean and in good shape since

Jet, the magazine?

I am literally wearing Bonobos pants right now, and the couple of shirts I have from them are among my favorites. I’ve really taken a liking to them over the past couple of years and…god damn it.

I’m slightly too young for DuckTales the broadcast TV show, but damn did I love Treasures of the Lost Lamp—and the DuckTales Valentines Day special with AphroDucky (recorded off the Disney Channel!)—as a little kid.

So innocent!

I’m 99% positive had you shown something of the flavor of Twin Peaks: The Return to people in the pre-cell phone age they would have been similarly frustrated with it. I think Fry from Futurama said it best: “Clever things make people feel stupid and unexpected things make them feel scared.” The original Twin Peaks

I had Crispin Glover-at-the-end-of-Back to the Future-type thoughts about the ending—just all wrapped up a little too perfectly and materialistically for me, at least as far as Kimmy’s concerned.

Thought of this line last week I saw a giant, supermarket delivery crate-sized Vidalia onions container in our building’s recycling bin. Also, I need to figure out which of my neighbors has a refrigerator half-filled with onions.
