With the “mainstream” carriers (Delta, United, American and Alaska), they have tiers of tickets.  With the lowest tier, you get a cheaper flight, but they reserve the right to beat you in other ways, such as checking luggage and changing flights.  They really want to charge more, but they can’t openly do it without…

I know its impossible but we need  a high-speed railway here in the US. Airlines there really is no other option than the airlines to do major travel and they do dumb shit like this because they can.
