It’s not racist. Different people have different priorities. If you’re struggling to feed 3 kids on a Walmart salary, BLM/LGBT rights probably aren’t your top voting issue. I’m not diminishing those causes, but it’s true. I don’t believe that makes them racist. They see that DNC implemented NAFTA and has done nothing

I cannot disagree that this is a white problem. But I also think it’s important to recognize the role of internalized misogyny. I saw a sickening number of women defending Trump’s talk about sexually assaulting women, wearing shirts inviting him to grab them by the pussy, calling Hillary a bitch, etc. Being a woman

So here’s the thing: did the majority of white voters vote for Trump? Yep. That was NEVER a question, though. Especially white men. Pointing fingers and saying white people cursed us all is going to accomplish nothing. Why would you think alienating those same white people more is helpful?!

The “one vote isn’t going to make a difference” mindset bothers me more and more as I get older. It would only make sense if you could predict the future. I think this election in particular made it very clear that that’s not a thing.

But hey, the good news is people are protesting! High schoolers, even! Here’s hoping

They could be motivated by race, and also motivated by other things. One’s motivation doesn’t mutually exclude another. I think Trump got a hodge podge of voters. Racists. Xenophobes. And disillusioned voters whose racism might be secondary to something more compelling, like unemployment. Republicans have pulled a

The toughest pill is that fifty-three percent of white women followed them.

We’ve been working at racism for 400 odd years. As someone who fights in the social justice struggle, that’s a long term process and not something to hang your hat on for 2020 or even 2024.

Friend. You had a candidate who brazenly came out and spewed racist, sexist, xenophobic, nativist bile at us for months. White folk make up 70% of voting public. You guys didn’t stop him.

Some are Republicans so they vote for Republicans without really thinking about it. Others (I’ve noticed many middle aged women in this category) have an irrational hatred of all things Hillary/Clintons that they can’t articulate. Others are pissed that they have to compete with black and brown people for jobs.

As a white woman who voted for Hillary, I feel like the greatest failure I  made was the failure to execute influence over my family, which was a horrible blind-spot of privilege. I have moved thousands of miles away from the relatives who I know voted for Trump, ao it was easy for me to simply stop talking to them

And that’s why he got 30% of the latino vote, right? Full stop; your narrative just doesn’t suit the facts. Shit, he even got more black votes than Romney did. Without said latino support, he wouldn’t have won, you know that? So stop ostracizing everyone who didn’t vote Clinton as a racist, it really, really doesn’t

Well, what can I say except, we’re stuck with it for the moment. So I see no reason to go looking for trouble.

No, Bernie would of won. You have to think of the Trump vote as a coalition.

Nationally, he polled significantly higher against Trump than Hillary...

And much of that is Bill’s fault. He repealed Glass-Steagall and passed NAFTA. Many working people never forgave him for NAFTA.

Sorry, when you say he, do you mean Trump? I’m unsure which part of my comment you’re referring to.

If you’re upset that Trump won (as I am), you want to look into how to beat him next time. If you want to beat him next time, you need to understand the reasons, the real reasons, he won this time. Not some comforting story that can be summed up in a single sentence. If progressives hope to learn from this defeat,

Forgive me for saying so but it seems pretty silly to suggest that 110 million voters were single issue voters and that that issue was “being racist”. It is not adult thinking to paint so large a group with so broad a brush. Trump won over 50% of women. Does that mean most women are mysogynists?
