I loved it and surprisingly, the character I liked most was the teenage boy. Putting a 100+ year old person into a kid and finding an actor that can actually portray that was genius.

Very cool! But no, HAL did not “blink” the red light with speech. That was part of his creepiness - spookiness, actually: A staring, unblinking, all-seeing eye, never-yielding eye.
