Because it’s correct? If you don’t understand the physics I can help teach you. Can you help me with pointing to what part you don’t understand?
It’s not the engine braking. It’s the mechanical linkage. The common rotational velocity means all the tires will reach the max static friction at the same time. With uncoupled systems (2wd) the first tire to reach max static friction will slip - that’s when it crosses the “threshold of friction” or the point of slip.…
Not a fallacy. It’s physics. I can explain if you want to understand why mechanically linked wheels (some AWD and all 4x4) stop faster. They absolutely do stop faster on snow and ice. Faster than any abs system.
It also helps you stop. Yes. Really.
Yeah. Jalopnik likes to recycle the same stuff. Even the factually wrong parts.
It has 4 brakes. It cannot stop as fast as 4wd. 4 braked wheels =\= uniform rotational velocity. Physics says 4wd stops faster - significantly faster on snow and ice.
4wd will stop faster. It's not basic physics. But it is real physics. Why must jalopnik hate facts and repeat false claims over and over and over?
That’s true. But my position is both consistent with a deeper understanding of physics. (Which is where I think most make the oversimplification mistake of assuming that uniform brake force and uniform rotational velocity deceleration are the same thing and or result in the same stopping distance - which they do not.)…
Uniform brake force =\= uniform tire deceleration. One you accept that you'll see why AWD stops faster on snow and ice.
Awd DOES STOP FASTER. Just because you don’t want it to be true because you drive a 2wd car does not change the fact that mechanically linked AWD does in fact reduce braking distance on many surfaces and especially on snow and ice. The difference is significant. And automotive journalist should know this.
Myth: you can’t stop faster on ice in 4x4.
Yes. It will stop faster. Because physics. People who say otherwise don’t understand physics.
I had a powerstroke F250 until about 2 weeks ago. I’m happy every day I don’t see it in my driveway! About half of the common known issues require the cab off. And mine broke down frequently for the entire time I owned it despite maintenance on time by the book, and never having any modifications - no tuners, not even…
The real truth is that they don't need it.
Similar to the Toyota/Lexus. They're inside the glove box. Just open door, slide in/out.
I love the idea of England becoming the 51st state of the USA. Consider the long term poetic justice. Especially if it didn't get and Senate representation.... Haha.
Feels dangerous and is dangerous are often mistaken. I’ve had a few of both in travels. Got lost once lost driving around Johannesburg at night, probably not dangerous, but sure AF felt like it. I ended up asking for directions and the dude at the little shop - no exaggerating here - said follow me and got in his own…
