I'm not a physicist, but either batteries are just not made efficiently now, or else the engineers would have to change the physical properties of the elements themselves.

Lead Acid batteries are easily recyclable. Lithium Ion are not. Lithium Polymer is supposed to be better than Li-Ion for recyclability, but they're not proven to be more cost-effective to manufacturer as Lead Acid, nor do they provide steady power for machines with heavy load.
