Having learned French as a child (mother tongue: English) all nouns genders’ are French in my brain. Learning German after age 40 was a challenge, as the masculine, feminine and neutral in German is often different.

The articles and gender stuff always gave me trouble. It was especially confusing since I knew a little Spanish and kept running into words where the gender was swapped in each language (el gato vs die Katze).

Viel Glück! Let me tell you though, as someone who studied it for years and lived and went to university there for a while, if you can become somewhat fluent all the other Germanic languages will come to you. Especially Dutch, which is kind of an Anglo-German mix it seems to me, you just have to learn how the spelling…
