I think the best tip I've ever been given to strengthen my writing is to prefer strong verbs over weaker verb-preposition combinations. This sounds lofty, but it's actually quite simple. Here are some example substitutions.

I started using Carbonite recently to back up my data. I gave it a spin on my laptop (which doesn't have much real data on it) then installed it on my desktop, which has about 30gigs of real data. It's been a few days and the initial backup is still running.
