So the 4+3 concept is fundamentally a 4-speed manual with a close-ratio overdrive unit that can “split” (truck terminology) 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.
Or just add aftermarket electric OD. Popular in the ‘80s to mod a 1960's muscle-car with a 3 speed trans. It adds OD to each gear essentially can be setup to just be the top gear. They're still sold....
I think you described the setup found on some older British cars: 4-speed gearbox plus electrically-operated overdrive (only available in 3rd and 4th).

Have a 2013 3-series, and mine has this feature. The collision shop couldn’t figure it out once they finished fixing it up.
