I think the biggest reason they continue to have bodies drop, even in episodes not actually about the murder (like this one) is so that they have a way to continue involving Gregson and Bell. As NYPD homicide detectives, the only reason for them to get involved is if a body drops.
I think the writers ma have painted themselves into a corner with how they started out the season with the Gregson/Holmes relationship and Holmes coming back. Now, they need to wait for that paint to dry while the figure out how to bring Gregson back in more directly.
I grew up going out of my way to find this show on Saturday mornings. Despite the odd style of animation, it actually had some more advanced story concepts than most Saturday morning far. Also, it was swords and sorcery, so I couldn't pass it up. Conan with a light saber is just awesome when you are a young kid.
